My Mother’s Quilts Book Review + a Chance to Win One of the Quilts Featured in the Book
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book from Fly By Promotions and the author to facilitate this review, however, all opinions are my own.
My Mother’s Quilts is a beautiful devotion book and shares the author Ramona Richards memories and lessons from the many quilters in her family. Each chapter presents a look at beautiful heirloom quilts and the stories behind them. Some of the stories are funny, and some hold special memories and life lessons. Each chapter also ends with a prayer request.
One of my favorite chapters was titled One Woman’s Trash. It tells the story of how when her mother first started quilting she made her a Dutch Doll quilt that she presented to her on her 18th birthday. She describes how much she loved the quilt and used it as a bedspread in her dorm room while she was away for college.
As her mother learned more about quilting, she kept spotting flaw every time she would bring it home from college. Each time she begged her daughter to let her fix it with her new skills. Finally, when a portion needed to be requited she tried to talk her into letting her make a new quilt.
The daughter still refused, and she said she didn’t care about any of that, and only cared that she made the quilt with love and especially for her. The chapter end with a reminder to look at others through the eyes of love and not try to pick or fix someone’s flaws.
This is just many of the heartwarming stories in the My Mother’s Quilts book I enjoyed!
The book features many chapters with full-color photography of each quilt some over 100 years old.
In all honesty, this is the first full book I’ve read in awhile, but I knew it was something I would enjoy. While I am not a quilter myself, I have a few family members who are or who were before they passed.
I remember growing up my mom had this beautiful quilt that she received as a gift from my Great Aunt. She displayed it proudly on a quilt hanger in her room.
We didn’t see my Great Aunt much because she lived several hours away, but I always knew it was something special to my mom. After my mom passed away, I acquired the beautiful quilt. I now have it packed away for safe keeping, and hope to pass it down to one of my kids when they are older.
This is a great book not only for quilters but anyone who loves beautiful family stories and who appreciates faithful encouragement and devotions.
