How to Make Homemade Finger Paint
What kid doesn’t love getting messy with finger paints?!? I made these the other day and my daughters had a blast!
It’s a little bit thicker and “chunkier” than the store bought kind, but it’s not toxic, super easy to make, and easy to clean up.
You can also make it any color you like by mixing food coloring. Besides the standard colors, we also made a turquoise shade by mixing two drops of green to four drops of blue and made purple by mixing three drops of red to one drop of blue.

- 3 tbs sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup corn starch
- 2 cups cold water
- Combine ingredients in small sauce pan over low-medium heat until mixture thickens.
- Cool and pour into jars or containers and add desired food coloring.
Here’s what the paint should look like as it starts to thicken.
It’s best to use thicker paper if you have it and also put down newspaper or something underneath the workspace, which I forgot to do the first time. I found it does wipe up rather easy, though. 🙂
I knew I saved all those baby food jars for a reason. 🙂
Store in airtight jars or containers

Oh wow, I LOVE this!!! I’ve been wanting to introduce finger painting to my 15-month-old, because I really think he’d like it, but I just hated the idea of him getting some in his mouth. EVERYTHING goes into his mouth haha, and I wouldn’t feel so worried if it was this homemade version. Thanks for sharing <3
Savannah, Thanks and thanks for stopping by! You should definitely try it if you get a chance. My two year old loves it and literally had it everywhere last time.Haha The good thing is it wipes up pretty easy, as long as you catch it before it dries all the way. 🙂
