How to Wean Your Baby From a Pacifier + Giveaway
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for Lily Method, however, all opinions and experiences are my own. See Disclosure Policy.
Pacifier Weaning
My youngest daughter has consistently relied on her pacifier to help soothe her since not long after birth. I obviously don’t have anything against babies using pacifiers and think they can sometimes be a lifesaver. Not to me mention, there has also been researching was done that shows a link that pacifiers may also reduce the risk of SIDS in the early months of life.(AAFP)
However, there comes a point when you have to break away from the pacifier. Some studies even link pacifier use after 6 months of age to more frequent ear infections.(AAFP)
We recently decided to try weaning off the pacifier mostly because we had to get up several times a night to plug it back in and I also had concerns about her teeth. I also figured it would be easier to break her from the pacifier sooner than later. For the last several months she has only used it during naptime and nights so I figured it would be the perfect time.
When is the Correct Age to Ditch the Pacifier?
Most pediatricians recommend ditching the pacifier before age 1. Still, the final decision comes down to the parents and what they feel is best for their little ones.
How to Ditch the Pacifier with Lily Method
First, there is the cold turkey method. And while this may work for some, this just sounds harsh to me for both the baby and the parents.
There’s also the gradual weaning method where you only offer the pacifier at night and at nap time. We were already pretty much at this phase and had been for a while, so I knew this wouldn’t work for us.
Another method is the Lily Method which gradually helps wean your baby in as little as five days. This sounds a lot less stressful and traumatic, and the one we decided to try.
I also want to say upfront that I have no experience weaning a toddler off a pacifier. My older kids never really took pacifiers (just because they preferred not to). So my experience comes from my youngest daughter who is almost 11 months old.
The Lily Method Weaning System which is a gradual way to wean your baby off the pacifier designed by a mom of 4 and pediatric dentist. It features five different orthodontic shaped pacifiers that vary in size that by the time your little one is on the last size she or he has lost all interest in their pacifier in as little as five days. Each pacifier is BPA and latex-free and designed for babies six months and up.
Step 1 & 2
I was a little worried at first when we started step 1 because my daughter can be picky when it comes to her pacifiers and bottle nipples and will usually only take a certain brand. However, she had no problem whatsoever switching her binky in for step 1. She also didn’t seem to notice much difference between step 1 and step 2.
Step 3
The third step was a little harder. She did okay at nap time, but had a slightly rougher time at night, but we stuck with it. She’s never been one to sleep through the night..so maybe next we will try sleep training. 😉
Step 4
Step 4 actually went by pretty easy, she didn’t even take it at nap time and slept well that night.
Step 5
By the time we got to step 5, she was just spitting it out, so she didn’t really use it much at all.
Binky Free!
Overall, it’s day 7, and we are still binky free! We’ve had a few rough nights, but like I said she’s never been one to sleep through the night.
