We always want the best for our children and that should certainly extend beyond supplying them with the best toys or clothes you can possibly manage. Whilst those things are nice, they are luxuries and you need instead be more focused on giving them the best education and best chance at a long, healthy life.

One way to do the latter is to teach them from an early age that eating healthily is vital. The best way to encourage your children to eat healthily is to lead by example. That means providing both them and yourself with a nutritious, well balanced diet.   1. Take it easy on fats

If you’re frying things regularly then invest in a decent non stick pan so that you can cut down on your oil use. For the times when you do need to use oil, make sure you’re using the right one! Opt for a much better, healthier choice such as pure sunflower oil for health conscious consumers. It doesn’t contain any saturated fats which are great for keeping cholesterol down. Not only that but it’s a good source of vitamin E too.

  1. Reduce your salt intake


Everyone knows that too much salt is a really bad thing. Many of us like to add salt to meals during the cooking stage to bring out the flavor, so there really is no need to be piling it on once you’ve served it up and everyone is digging in at the table. If you really want to step it up then avoid using salt altogether and use alternatives to get that kick. Seasonings such as herbs, spices, pepper, lemon juice, vinegar and mustard are all fantastic ways of bringing flavor to your meals.

If you and your family are lovers of cheese then that’s ok – I’m not about to tell you you’ll need to give it up… fear not! But of course, cheese can be incredibly fatty and so if you want to be using it in some of your dishes, a good approach is to use a stronger cheese to pack in the flavor so that you have to use less altogether.

Fibre is really important for the healthy functioning of our bodies, so it’s vital that you get enough of it into your whole family’s diet. Use good carbs such as brown rice, brown pasta and brown bread to increase the fiber intake of your loved ones – you’ll all be left feeling fuller for much longer and so you’ll be less likely to start snacking on unhealthy options – which defeats the whole point of trying to cook more healthily.
