Transform Your Garage Into A Home Hub For DIY

As regular readers will already know, I’m always keen to get my hands dirty with a DIY or craft project. Admittedly, the vast majority are smaller tasks for decorative pieces and unique gifts. However, one of the main reasons for not taking on those bigger challenges is the lack of a creative zone.

Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to have a DIY center in my home. However, a carpenter I know has turned his garage into a place for completing projects at home, and it is fantastic. Here’s how you can follow his lead.

Step 1: Clear The Space

If you’re anything like the average homeowner, your garage is currently little more than a glorified storage space. Don’t panic; you’ll soon have that fixed with a decluttering session. A garage sale will allow you to get rid of unwanted items while earning a little money. Those funds can be used to complete the future transformation.

Other items can be throw away or given to charity. There’s a good chance that you could have oil spillages or damps spots too, so make sure you attend to those too. After all, it’ll be a lot easier to rectify those issues now rather than later.

Step 2: Make It A Room

Before giving the garage it’s new purpose, it needs to become an actual room. Right now, it’s meant as a place to store the car. Adding a window to encourage natural light and air circulation will make a world of difference to the overall vibe of the room.

Given that you’re planning to use the space for work, it doesn’t need to be a cosy bedroom. Then again, a few coats of paint would be nice. Either way, adding an HVAC system to ensure that the temperature remains agreeable is key. After all, no mom (or Dad) will be rushing out to complete the latest job if the place is too cold. Finally, you may want to ensure that there is a water supply as work can get a little messy.

Step 3: Create A Workspace

The whole point of having this workspace is so that your crafts and DIY projects no longer have to impact the rest of the house. However, you need to ensure that there is enough space to get those jobs completed. Otherwise, you’ll be fighting a losing battle from the off. If you are planning to allow the kids in the garage when you’re working, it’s important to have a safe space designated for them too.

This is an opportunity to allow yourself to save money on future work by taking on bigger projects. Investing in the right tools will enable you to do this. A Rikon bandsaw will open up new opportunities while it’s important to have an updated toolbox. This way, you’ll be able to complete any household job imaginable.

Step 4: Keep It Tidy

Creating this nice new space will probably give you a number of ideas about future projects to modernize your home. However, you need to ensure that this space remains useful for the long haul. Quite frankly, organization is key, which is why adding garage storage facilities cannot be ignored.

Apart from the organizational aspects, this will help keep the space safer. This is a major factor for any parent, even if the kids are unlikely to ever enter. If nothing else, it will reduce the risk of misplacing or accidentally breaking items too.
