There are many reasons people choose to make homemade deodorant. Some people have skin issues or sensitive skin and prefer a more natural solution. Others want to use fewer chemicals, including deodorants or antiperspirants that contain aluminum compounds or other ingredients that can possibly disrupt estrogen levels.
For me, the reason is pretty simple; I wanted a deodorant that contained as few ingredients as possible, so I knew exactly what I was using. This recipe is also so easy and fun to make, and works and smells great! -Win-win!
Benefits of Natural Deodorant
- Great for sensitive skin and won’t block pores
- Easy to Make
- Easily customizable
You Will Need:
- Coconut Oil (I use this)
- Cornstarch
- Baking Soda
- Beeswax ( I use this)
- Essential Oil
- Containers ( I use these) If you do not want to use plastic you can pour the melted deodorant in a glass jar with a lid and apply with an applicator.
- Labels – Optional (Print here) *You can print the labels using Avery Sticker Paper or use cardstock and clear packing tape to adhere the labels to the container.
Please Note:
- This is not an antiperspirant and will not keep you from sweating. Sweating is actually a good thing! Many commercial deodorants or antiperspirant’s actually block pores that keep you from sweating.
- Once you switch over to a natural deodorant, you may notice you sweat more as your pores become unblocked. After a few days or so, you should start to notice less sweating and less odor even when you’re not wearing deodorant. Trust me on this – I can promise you there is no way I would walk around with stinky pits!
Also, keep in mind everyone’s body chemistry is different and can react differently depending on the type of essential oil you use.
I like to use 5 drops of tea tree oil since it is antibacterial and antimicrobial and I use 15 drops of lemongrass essential oil. The lemongrass essential oil also has antimicrobial properties, and I love the scent! Feel free to use your favorite oils as well!
- You will also need to store this deodorant in a cool dark spot. The beeswax helps keep it together, but since it contains coconut oil, it can start to melt and become soft when the temperature is 76 degrees or higher. You can also store it in the refrigerator or freezer but it is not necessary especially in cooler months.
