I recently had a chance to read the book A Drop of Hope by Keith Calabrese thanks to Moms Meet and Scholastic books. The book is geared for ages 8-10, and I thought it would be the perfect book for my daughter and I, who turns 8 in a few weeks to read together.
I’ve always loved reading and have tried to instill the love of reading in my kids. I read to my 3 and 4-year-old, but now that my daughter is older she mostly reads chapter books to herself.
My 8-year-old and I both took turns reading a Drop of Hope and it was a great bonding experience. Reading this book also sparked many conversations about unexpected friendships, being kind to others, empathy, and of course hope.
The book follows several characters who are in the sixth grade. They live in a rust belt town that is separated into upper class and lower class neighborhoods. They have seen several factories close, and it looks like the last one in town may also close soon.
The kids discover an old well that grants wishes (at least that’s what everyone thinks). Three sixth graders are behind the small act of kindness all over town.
The inspiring hope provided by the well brings the town together and forges many unexpected friendships, and shows the town they are much more alike than they are different.
If you have a child between 8-12 or know a child in that age range I highly recommend this book for them! If you get a chance, I also recommend you read along with them, or at least ask them questions about it. It’s a great book that even I enjoyed and will definitely warm your heart.
You can purchase a Drop of Hope by Keith Calabrese in the kids section wherever books are sold. You can also find Scholastic’s A Drop of Hope at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, BooksA-Million, iBooks, Audible, and Google Play.
