I have been making hobo meals as long as I can remember, It’s also one of my favorite meals to make!
I made it the other night, and totally forgot that I’ve never even shared it on the blog. So of course, I took a quick pic, and decided I would share it today!
What I love about hobo meals is how easy and versatile they are!
If you prefer turkey meat, you can use that, or if you would rather have chicken, use that!
You can even substitute the veggies, although the baking time may vary. It really is that versatile! Not to mention, easy cleanup!
I’ve made them with chicken and sweet potatoes before and it was delicious, but today I’m sharing my favorite way to make them. This is the recipe I traditionally use.
The secret I think that really takes this recipe up a notch is the seasoning. I use Cavender’s All Purpose Greek Seasoning.
This seasoning is great on beef, chicken and even veggies. We use it on almost everything at our house. You can find it at most grocery stores with other seasonings or purchase it on Amazon here.
In place of Cavender’s, you could also try Tony Chachere’s Original Creole Seasoning or your favorite seasoning.
Hobo Meals
seasoned hamburger, carrots, and cheesy potatoes.
Ingredients
- 2 lb ground beef
- 2 lb bag baby carrots
- 3-4 potatoes (cubed)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)
- 4-5 pats of butter
- seasoning to taste (I use Cavenders and a little salt and pepper)
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
-
Cut up 4-5 squares of aluminum foil large enough to hold the hamburger patty, carrots and potatoes, and enough room to close the foil packets. Place the pieces of foil on a cookie sheet. ( can also just place the foil packets directly in the oven, but the sheet pan makes it easier to handle)
-
Shape ground beef into approximately 2 inch thick patties
-
Place the ground beef patties in the center of each piece of foil.
-
Place diced potatoes on the sides of each ground beef patty.
-
Add carrots to the other side of the foil packet.
-
Season the ground beef patty and carrots and potatoes with Cavender's liberally ( or your choice seasoning) and salt and pepper.
-
Add pats of butter to the vegetables and shredded cheese on the potatoes and ground beef patties if desired.
-
Close each foil packet and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until done and vegetables are tender.
Recipe Notes
This recipe can also be made on the grill using medium heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until vegetables are tender and ground beef reaches 160 degrees.
