Renovating? Here’s your checklist.
With more of us spending an increasing amount of time at home, it probably won’t come as a surprise to read that renovation has been something of a hot topic over the last few months.
Most building contractors have waiting lists of months; they’ve never been so busy.
Of course, a renovation project isn’t just about deciding what room, and then what features to choose from. There is oh-so much more to this expensive topic and through today’s post, we will take a look at three points which you should never neglect to include from your checklist.
Dust: it deserves a checklist of its own
We’ve included this first point in one broad topic; dust.
It’s something that’s often forgotten about, regardless of the type of renovation project your home is set to be the subject of. Whether you are knocking down a wall (extremely dust heavy) or laying a new floor (moderate levels of dust), the D-word is always going to exist.
The problem with dust is that it doesn’t just isolate itself to the space in which your renovation works are taking place in. It travels everywhere, even if your doors are closed.
As such, get any precious belongings into self storage facilities, while taking any precaution you can think of to stop the spread of dust. There are a whole host of great ideas on how to do this on this page.
The interim: how will you cope?
We all cling to renovation projects because of the elusive ending. We’re all after that new kitchen, bathroom or (insert your room of choice here). However, something that many of us forget about is the interim. In other words, what happens while the project is ongoing?
This is going to spell different repercussions depending on the type of project. For example, in the case of a kitchen, it stands to reason that you need to find somewhere to cook for the weeks that it will take to replace your units. This might be visiting family frequently, or it might be investing in temporary equipment.
Again, each project brings its different requirements, but the point we’re trying to make is that you don’t just think about the end result. Think about everything in-between, as well.
The costs: the taboo topic
Finally, let’s talk money.
This isn’t about the direct cost of your renovation project. After all, we’re pretty sure you’ve done the math here as you receive quote after quote from contractor after contractor.
Instead, this is about all of those hidden costs. For many people, the costs don’t stop with the building. With their new-look space, they’ll also want to turn to new-look furniture. It becomes very difficult to resist the urge and before you know it, your project’s budget has doubled through items that you never even accounted for.
Make sure every little cost is budgeted for, whether it’s new furniture, or the costs of temporarily surviving with kitchen equipment as your main room undergoes its renovation.
