How To Make Your Own Scented Reed Diffuser
DIY Reed Diffuser
I’ve bought many reed diffusers over the years. It’s no surprise If you read the blog that I love things that make the house smell good.
I use all different types of items such as candles, wax melts, scented lamp oil (see here how to make your own), air freshener, (make your own here) and have several essential oil diffusers. Of course, I don’t use all of these at once, that would be a little overkill, but I do love a good smelling house!
I use both commercial and natural products. I’m not one that uses exclusively all natural products, but I do like to use them when I can.
This week I decided to make a simple Reed Diffuser. A reed diffuser is an easy way to add a constant scent to your home. A reed diffuser simply consists of rattan or bamboo reed sticks placed in a bottle with fragrance. It provides a constant scent until all of the fragrance has evaporated out of the bottle
You can buy many different types of reed diffusers however many of them are quite expensive. Making your own is actually quite easy and inexpensive!
You only need a glass bottle, you can use almost any type of bottle, but preferably one with a narrow opening. If you use a bottle with a large opening the scent will evaporate very quickly.
For the two diffusers I made, I actually cleaned an old empty bottle of red wine vinegar I had, and the blue diffuser I made using an empty essential oil bottle. For the reeds, I used bamboo skewers or you can buy reed diffuser replacement sticks.
*It goes without saying, but this should be kept away from kids and pets.
Supplies:
glass or ceramic bottle (preferably one with a narrow opening, so the scent doesn’t evaporate too quickly) I used an old red wine vinegar bottle that I had at the house rinsed and cleaned and an empty essential oil bottle.
Reeds or bamboo skewers
essential oils of your choice (I used Lavender in the clear bottle and lemongrass in the blue bottle)
carrier oil (jojoba, safflower, or almond)
rubbing alcohol 70%

Easy Diy Scented Reed Diffuser
Ingredients
- 1 glass or ceramic bottle
- 1/4 cup carrier oil (can use almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut or other carrier oil)oil
- 15-25 drops essential oil (your choice)
- 2 Tbsp alcohol
Instructions
-
In a glass measuring cup mix carrier oil, essential oil, and alcohol
-
Use one of the reeds to mix the carrier oil, essential oils, and alcohol in the measuring cup.
-
Pour the mixture into your preferred bottle (can use small funnel if needed)
-
Bundle the reeds and insert them in the bottle.
-
Flip the sticks every few days to refresh the scent
Tips:
You can flip the reeds for more fragrance every few days or every day if you like.
You can put as many reeds in the bottle as you like. For the bigger reed diffuser I made, I added lots of reeds, and for the smaller bottle, I only added three.
You can add a few drops of food coloring if you want to match your decor. Just remember the dye will travel up the reed when you flip them, and if you add to much dye it can clog the reeds. Use no more than 5 drops per 8 oz bottle.
A few essential oil blends to try
10 drops lemongrass 10 drops lavender
8 drops rosemary 6 drops lemon 6 drops vanilla
6 lemon 6 lavender 6 grapefruit
