Making The Most of New Year
If you’re like most people, at this time of year, now is the time to think about transforming your life and living better; whatever that means to you, as we all have a different idea of the changes we need to make in order to live a better and more fulfilling life.
In this article, we’re going to take a look at how to squeeze the most of this month that kickstarts many of us into taking serious action.
When you think about the term “New Year’s resolution” a resolution is taking something that was once a ‘should’ (i.e. I should try to get to the gym more often) into an absolute must – it is becoming resolute in your action to achieve your goal.
This has a lot of energy, but it must be sustained, as you don’t want it to be like a firework that has a short burst of energy in the new year but then quickly dies out – you want to keep the fire burning and the best way to do that, is to fuel the fire with progress.
Have you ever noticed how progress is the thing that actually makes people the most happy? It’s not achievement, per se, as in you can have an incredibly overweight person that has lost half a stone who feels on top of the world because of the progress they are making – whereas, you can have someone in tip top fitness who has plateaued in terms of their progress, who feels down about themselves.
There’s great power in progress, whether that comes down to losing weight or working through an online criminal justice associates degree – progress seems to be the cureall. The challenge, however, is that we tend to lose the energy and excitement of the New Year, meaning progress tends to slow down, then stop, and we revert back to our old ways.
START TODAY
Some people focus so much on the gap that exists between where they are and where they want to be – that they end up feeling quite down and overwhelmed. What you want, instead of focusing on the space between where you are and where you want to be is to focus on taking steps to get there.
In this sense, rather than procrastinate and put it off until tomorrow, start taking action today – no matter how small, as even if you end up just taking baby steps eventually you will get to where you want to be.
THE POWER OF PROGRESS
The more progress you make, the better you will feel about yourself and the more motivated you will be to keep moving in the direction of your dreams – so start making progress, today, and it will propel you forward into the future.
CELEBRATE
It’s really important to pat yourself on the back from time to time, and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they might seem – as the more you celebrate, the more your brain will associate taking action with feeling good.
