I have an effusion oil fragrance lamp that I’ve had for years, and absolutely love! If you’re unsure of what an effusion lamp is, it’s basically a fragrance lamp that disperses scent from a heated stone that you light attached to a wick. (see here) Not to be confused with an oil lamp or lantern.
Unfortunately, I hadn’t used my effusion lamp in awhile, mostly because the refill fuel for it can be quite expensive. My favorite scent Tyler Candle Company Kathina (they also make candles, wax melts and sachets in this scent too), is around $22 a bottle. While it’s worth that much because it smells ah-mazing, I was using way too much.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve also been using my essential oil diffuser more, so I just haven’t used the fragrance lamp much. I recently got it out again after our move, and during a late night Pinterest scrolling, found out you could make your own fragrance oil with essential oils and alcohol!
You MUST use at least 70% or 90% alcohol. The 50% alcohol contains too much water and will not light. Also, please note if your fragrance lamp manufacturer offers a warranty, this will more than likely void it. Most companies advise against using anything but their brand oil.
However, I found it to work amazingly well, it’s cost-effective, and you can use any essential oil or essential oil combo you like!
Supplies:
Effusion Oil Lamp
Essential Oils (your choice fragrance)
Instructions:
- Get out your pretty fragrance lamp (If you don’t have one, I like this one here)
- Add 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oils directly to the alcohol bottle (if it is a new bottle you may need to dump a few tablespoons of the alcohol out first before you add in the essential oils.
- Make sure to mark the bottle and what fragrance you used ( I used lemongrass)
- Next, fill your fragrance lamp 2/3 full, insert the wick into the lamp, and light the wick burner.(do not leave unattended while burning) Allow the flame to burn for 1-3 minutes and then blow out. Place back on the decorative shade.
- Enjoy the fragrance!
- Store the remaining fragrance in a cool, dry area
Super easy and cost-effective and will scent the whole room!
This worked like a charm and made the house smell amazing! I just love how strong a scent it produces (you can also adjust the drops of essential oils if you prefer a lighter scent or using in a smaller room).
