Over the past several years, I’ve started making several of my own products. Several of them I have shared on the blog such as DIY Bath Bombs, Air Freshener, Cold & Flu Steamers and my favorite DIY Orange Oil!
Don’t get me wrong, I still buy many of my items at the store, but I actually enjoy making my own products. There’s something about making products with your own hands, and knowing exactly what’s in them that is gratifying.
Many commercial items you buy at the store have waaay too many ingredients, and you almost have to be a scientist to figure out what exactly is in them! Not to mention, many of the ingredients can be harmful over time and are not safe for use around children.
Most of the time, making your own products can also save you money and even time. When I first started making my own products, I was surprised at how little time some of them took to make, and most of them could be made with items I already had in my house!
I recently received the book Homemade:707 Products To Make Yourself To Save Money And The Earth courtesy of Readers Digest which includes 707 recipes that include items you can make yourself at home!
Including:
- Items for the Kitchen
- Health & Beauty Care Items
- Cleaning & Garden Products
- Pet Care Items & more!
The Homemade book includes so many great recipes and items to try that I couldn’t wait to try one! I love that you can find everything from recipes, to beauty care items and even cleaning recipes all in one book!
It’s so much easier and convenient to have it all in one place than searching all over the internet for one item I want to make. I also like it in the book form, so I have it again for future use when I want to make something again.
One of the products I made was DIY Window and Glass Cleaner
Supplies:
White Vinegar
Rubbing Alcohol
Spray Bottle 32 oz.

old newspapers or microfiber cloth
To Make:
Mix ⅓ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol. 3¼ cups water in a clean 32 oz spray bottle (I used an empty and clean commercial cleaner bottle I had). Shake the bottle well before using. Shake the bottle well before using. Spray on the windowpane or other glass surface and dry with crumpled newspaper or a microfiber towel.

Not only is this window and glass cleaner easy to make, it works fabulously on my windows and mirrors!
We have glass doors to the back of our house, and the kids love to watch the birds and squirrels out back while also leaving me cute little fingerprints and nose prints on the glass. I clean them every day and sometimes a couple times a day, so needless to say, I love how easy and economical this glass cleaner is. I even had all the ingredients already at the house!
