I love flavored popcorn! Most of the time I go for a sweet and salty mix like marshmallow popcorn or birthday cake popcorn, and I love sharing holiday themed popcorn recipes like the Valentine’s day or grinch popcorn on the blog. However, sometimes I crave a more savory and salty type of popcorn like this garlic and dill popcorn.
The garlic and dill popcorn seasoning is easy to make, but the real secret that makes this popcorn special is using Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil!
Did you know that Malaysia is the worlds second largest producer of palm oil and the United States is a major export destination for it?
Malaysia was also the first country to produce sustainable palm oil and is credited with reducing poverty in Malaysia. By the end of 2019, the country plans to have all 100% of its palm oil certified sustainable.
Compared to other types of oil such as corn or soybean, palm oil is also non-GMO and ideal for high cooking temperatures, so it’s great to use to pop popcorn, for stir-frys and more!
It’s also a great alternative to partially hydrogenated oils that are still in many prepackaged foods. Thankfully, now many are switching to healthier oils, and you can find palm oil in many nutrition bars and healthier snack foods. You can look on the label to see if palm oil is included in your favorite foods!
Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil comes in a golden and red variety. The Red palm oil is especially rich in vitamin E and a great antioxidant. It also contains up to 15 times more provitamin A carotenes than carrots!
You can definitely make the dill and garlic popcorn seasoning without using palm oil or even use it on microwave popcorn, but the palm oil gives it a great flavor! It also has a beautiful red color to it and turns the popcorn a nice golden yellow color when popped! If you would like to find out more Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil you can go to palmoilhealth.org
To make popcorn using palm oil you will need a large pot, palm oil, popcorn and of course don’t forget my dill and garlic seasoning recipe below!
1. Add 3 Tablespoons of Malaysian palm oil to the pan, along with 3 kernels. Cover and heat over medium heat until you hear the kernels pop. Remove the pot from the heat and discard the popped kernels.
2. Add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels to the pan with a lid slightly askew so steam can escape. Give the pot a few good shakes.
3. When the popping has slowed down, pour it into a large bowl.
4. Drizzle with oil or melted butter and sprinkle with the garlic and dill seasoning (or your favorite seasoning) to taste.
